Afraid To Die (Selena Alvarez/Regan Pescoli) - Lisa Jackson This book started off so strong and creepy in the actions of the serial killer and the smartassedness of a supporting character. I was thrilled that I found another twisted sister who wasn't afraid to show her inner twistedness. As with most thriller/mysteries written by female mystery writers, it then took the romance dance/loaded down with emotions route. With a "roll the eyes", pointless "well that is stupid" twist (note..not twistedness) point at the end that left with a nice heartwarming feeling. I understand that Ms. Jackson considers herself a Romantic Suspence writer but sometimes, imho, writers can take the romance aspect too far which can then detract from the suspense aspect of the storyline. That is what happened with this novel. My husband (and to a point, me) have a bias against female mystery writers for these reasons and this book is a perfect reason why. Sad as it is, I tend to avoid female mystery writers (with really only desiring to stalk a couple as to new releases and such)like the plague. Being a sister myself, you try to support women, but when it seems like that they follow the stereotypical rolls given to them, it becomes really difficult! It seems that they are afraid to go to deep dark places or that they need to buried their storylines down with romance, sexual tension and the romance dance which isn't for the most part isn't seen in their male counterparts and Afraid to Die was a perfect example of that.
